Magazine Spread

Designing the magazine spread for Wes Siler’s “Why Everyone Should Be Trained in Military First Aid” proved a unique challenge due to the political implications of the piece. I chose to explore the deeply pessimistic suggestions regarding the unavoidable ubiquity of mass shootings. Experimenting with a mid-century modern approach and dark humor, I created a piece that spoke to the visual language both of early advertising as well as wartime propaganda posters while maintaining modern undertones through color and type choices. In trying to capture the absurdity, juxtaposition became inevitable – the no-nonsense Franklin Gothic with bubbly Banana Yeti; a retro style and a uniquely modern problem; a bright, simple color palette with a dark, complex topic.
