Hunger by Roxane Gay
// Cover Design
For the design of Roxane Gay’s memoir, Hunger, I began with my impressions of narrative, voice, and theme. I worked towards a concept that was raw and honest, hinted at past violence, and utilized uncomfortable spatial dynamic. I chose a pear, because they’re so easily anthropomorphized as a symbol of the body. The brown cut alludes to the violence, while its relative health indicates a full life. Unable to fit in the canvas provided, the pear conveys discomfort and resignation in its size. I chose a slab serif for its heavy weight and frank personality, while the overlapping type illustrates the regular discomfort and painful interactions in inhabiting an oversized body.
